Some Personal Highlights
I love working with a crew. All the work happens so much faster. It's much easier to see the broad strokes and not get too hung up on the insignificant. It's true that many voices can create quite a clamour but, well motivated, they can also enrich the tapestry of a story with depth and authenticity.
THE DARK YEARS
(Barna-Alper 2007-2008)
Designer, Co-Director
Events during the great depression in Canada had a profound influence on the shape of policy for decades to come. This three part documentary mini-series covers both the headlines and the more personal tragedies as filtered through the pages of The Toronto Star newspaper.
This was a mammoth task, creating more than two hours of animated content. A number of different styles were employed to represent mythic or more mundane realities. I designed more than a hundred characters and story-boarded some large chunks. This clip is my rough cut for a short I re-edited from the show. Sorry for the glitches.
ANGELA ANACONDA
(Decode 1998-1999)
Director
Angela often had a bad day. Her saving grace was a vivid imagination that allowed her to exact an appropriate virtual revenge.
The style of this show lent itself to exploring new techniques. I was struck by how the characters became more like actors on a set. This allowed us to adjust for storytelling well into the blocking stage, using the storyboard as only a very rudimentary guide.

STICKIN' AROUND
(Nelvana 1995-1997)
Director
Life as drawn by kids.
It was fun playing with the improvised flavour of the action, mixing naturalistic voice performances with wild design elements. Copy and paste the link to watch the opening.
